Not so Purple Worm

I painted this a month or two ago for work. GF9 is releasing Dungeons and Dragons figures soon, and this model is in the first wave. 

We painted up some examples of our own to show off what you can do with them. I went for a desert theme using scorpions and snakes as inspiration.

I wanted to use this little project as a chance to get some practice in with the airbrush. I haven't used one much before, and never for blending/gradients. The intention was to go from beige on the bottom/belly, to a very dark brown along the back.

The model has dings and scratches sculpted on it where it's been previously attacked or stabbed. I made these into current wounds by adding arrows. I got the idea from this blog post, http://massivevoodoo.blogspot.co.nz/2012/01/tutorial-creating-realistic-arrows.html (awesome blog BTW), but instead I just used thin brass rod and paper.

I added a little extra sand to the base and painted it similar to my Warmachine bases. For the mouth I use reddish browns and white mixes to highlight areas and the gloss varnish helps sell the effect.

This was a really fun mini to paint and a learned a lot. Not so scared of the airbrush now and look forward to using on my IKRPG Warjack.

Equinox 2012

This past weekend was Equinox 2012, a tournament with all the major systems. I of course entered the Warmachine 35point event. You can head over to http://www.thrallblacks.com/ to check out all the details and some photos. Chris Baker ran a great event with awesome terrain and prizes. Had 7 really fun games and even managed to win 3 of them. Obviously not the best result but better than I was hoping! I walked away with some tokens, some foam trays and a sweet Thrallblacks beer glass!

As you can see we did indeed get my t-shirt design printed. A few of the other entrants now have them as well as Chris, Sean and I.

Before the event (literally just before the event...) I got these dudes finished for my list.

And my Reinholdt proxy (from Malifaux) which people really liked.

James and I tried out using printed backgrounds for photos and they seemed to have turned out better than just plain white. I retook photos of Riardon Immerfel and entered him into the Steve Dean painting competition (www.steve-dean.co.uk)

Now it's onto planning what to take to NatCon in a few weeks. I need to come up with a fun 25point Highlander list using stuff I already own. It'll no doubt involve some painting. MacBain perhaps? Oh sorry... MACBAIN! perhaps?

R. Immerfell

Another figure for our DnD campaign. The group doesn't know who he is yet so I'll add character details later.

I used the Epic Vlad figure from the Warmachine range. Had to do away with the crazy shoulder pads and sculpt some more fur around his neck, which gives him more of a wintery feel anyway. First time painting snow. Could improve it next time but it does make me want to do a winter army of sorts, especially with all the winter shots I've been taking at work.

Morituri

A group of us at work started playing D&D 4E earlier this year. We started out with pre-written adventures with Sean as DM. After a while Sean decided to create his own world (as he does) for us to start new characters in, with more chance for character development.

I really got into making a character. Not just the stats, but a history and image. He's goes by the name Morituri (although the others have appropriately been calling him 'The Shadow') and he's an Assassin. I can't reveal his history yet, as it is still a mystery to the other characters in our campaign. I can reveal aesthetics though!

I had fun drawing this. Have to point out that I cheated and used some existing D&D art as a base. It was just too perfect for my character.

And here's the figure I found and painted for him. It's from the Malifaux range.

We've just reached level 7 now, so it's time to start thinking about Paragon paths, and I've got some good ideas. I do enjoy having a secretive character. What is his real name? Why does he cover his face and use disguises? What was his life like before? What's with the purple sash around his thigh? What race is he?! All things the other characters will have to find out.
